Juvenile delinquency at an all time high

The present age can be regarded as one of the toughest times in the post-independence period. Why is it so? The main reason is that we are living in a society where the age-old and cherished values are eroding rapidly and the venerated pillars of social structure are at an all time low. To be very precise, all these have become prominent from the beginning of the nineties and with the advent of the open market economy. The new economic formation brought along with it many vices and above all the philosophy of rapacity. This has led to the emergence of an eccentricity within the society, along with violence and crime, which is dragging it towards a final destruction. This view, in general, has come up from the intellectuals of different school of thoughts.  

A recently completed study in the national capital endorsed this vision in the most proficient way. To the study, almost 12 percent students of different schools and colleges in south Delhi do not find themselves safe anymore and as a result carry weapons with them to the respective educational institutions. This sensational finding has come out from a study conducted by the Department of Community Medicine, Safdarjung Hospital in the recent days. The main objective of the investigation was to identify the reason leading to the exponential rise of violent behavior among adolescents in the last decade. To the estimation of the study, all but 13.5 per cent of students had either threatened or injured the opponent with a sharp weapon in the past 12 months. The majority of them happened to be males.

Speaking on this Prof. Rahul Sharma, of the Department of Community Medicine and in charge of the investigation stated, "A higher proportion of males (15.7 per cent) than females (3.9 per cent) were carrying a weapon since the past one year and involvement in violence was more amongst males than females."

The situation is extremely dreadful and all types of weapons are being taken ranging from guns to swords.

 

This can be changed only if the governments take stern measures at the earliest.
